Because each kind of bird prefers a certain kind food, one of the best ways to get variety of birds is to provide a variety of foods.  This can be accomplished by having a couple of feeding stations in your yard, each meant to attract a different kind of bird.

Black Oil Sunflower Seed

Black oil sunflower seed is the go-to seed that will attract the most kinds of birds.  Cardinals, chickadees, sparrows, finches, nuthatches will all enjoy this food.

Nijer Seed

Nijer seed (Black Thistle) is loved by finches, especially Goldfinches.  Because the seed is so fine, this food requires special feeders to keep it from pouring out of larger feeder holes.

Suet

Suet is high is in calories and is enjoyed by clinging birds of all sorts.  Woodpeckers, nuthatches, and chickadees will visit a suet feeder often.

Nectar

The smallest birds to visits our area, hummingbirds are the metabolic wonders of the bird world.  In order to hover like they do, they needs lots and lots of high energy food.  Hang a hummingbird feeder near a window or porch and watch the antics begin!

Peanuts

Whether whole or shelled, birds love peanuts.  Woodpeckers and Blue Jays will find them.

Fruit

Oranges and grape jelly are a favorite of Baltimore Orioles.  Orioles only visit our area during spring migration, but for the couple of weeks they are here, it's worth a few oranges.
